Ocelots in the Sky Islands? That's right! The small spotted cat, which we know very little of in our region, is now making appearances. Sky Island Alliance's Mexico field program is capturing the first photos of live ocelots in the wilds of the Sky Islands, just south of the international border. Working cooperatively with ranch owners, the program is focused on identifying and protecting ranches that host important ecological attributes. Right now, the project is working with two ranches totalling over 20,000 acres in northern Sonora. Want to learn more? Program details are at http://www.skyislandalliance.org/jaguars.htm.
SIA's initial camera project in the Sierra Azul Mountains of Sonora, has yielded photos of ocelot.

Who ever thought Sky Island Alliance would be given an award by the Federal Highways Administration? It happened, and rest assured that it wasn't for our involvement in building more highways. To the contrary, SIA teamed up with agencies, academia, and other non-profits to construct the first comprehensive analysis of crtical wildlife linkages across Arizona. The report, called Arizona 's Wildlife Linkages Assessment, advocates for the integration of wildlife considerations into the forefront of transportation and regional planning processes. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) was a lead co-author on the report, so we're thrilled to be a part of initiating change in how we accommodate wildlife near and across our roads!
